President-elect Donald Trump, with help from Congress, could punish about 300 “Sanctuary” cities that shield undocumented immigrants by cutting federal funding they receive. Programs that could be cut off and the total grants provided in fiscal year 2015:
Hundreds of state and local law enforcement agencies rely on federal grants for different programs.
Provides assistance for state and local law enforcement, prosecutions, courts, corrections, drug treatment and crime victim and witness initiatives.
Helps local law enforcement agencies hire and train officers to carry out community policing initiatives.
Reimburses state and local governments for the costs of incarcerating undocumented immigrants.
Helps local law enforcement create and administer programs to reduce violence against women.
Helps “high-threat, high-density” urban areas prepare for and respond to acts of terrorism.
Helps fill in “high-priority preparedness gaps” in areas that could be exploited by terrorism.
Funds joint efforts between federal immigration officials and state and local law enforcement agencies to secure the nation’s borders.
